Emma Slade-Jones
My coaching and mentoring journey started informally after I qualified as a hygienist in 2004 whilst serving in the RAF providing mentorship to dental nurses on placement. Alongside 18 years clinical experience, I also provided mentorship to learners undertaking Dental Hygiene qualifications whilst employed as a tutor. I gained management experience working as senior tutor / course manager and worked extensively in clinical, educational, training standards and quality assurance.
Since leaving the military I’ve furthered my experience alongside clinical roles, providing educational consultancy and quality assurance for apprenticeships and formal teaching programmes. I have also mentored in a range of settings both formally and informally, volunteering with charities to provide C&M which has enabled me to hone my skills and experience of providing constructive personalised yet practical feedback, and tailoring C&M sessions to suit individual needs. I enjoy supporting others in their pursuit of development and training and have enjoyed mentoring those undertaking professional qualifications. Working in various clinical and educational settings has given me a breadth of experience and opportunity to use transferability of skills and implement these into C&M sessions. These include utilisation of communication and interpersonal skills to build effective rapport and develop relationships, delivering care with empathy, actively listening, and managing expectations with integrity.
Experiencing the benefits of coaching first-hand has enabled me to identify personal values, goals, and priorities in both my personal and professional life and pursue a career I love. I gave up being ‘busy’ and adopted being productive and promised myself only to pursue what I was passionate about. Supporting others in their development falls into that passion, and I believe work / life balance is key. I enjoy sharing the excitement and energy of possibility, and seeing confidence grow as goals are achieved. I gained my formal C&M qualification in 2017, and now coach full time with a special interest in solutions focused and co-active coaching approaches, NLP, and transactional analysis.
I was delighted to support with the BSDHT C&M programme design and implementation, and undertake the position of BSDHT C&M Council rep. Although my role largely involves providing support and supervision to coaches and programme coordination, I am available to answer any questions or queries you may have around the programme and assist you in setting up a discovery call with your chosen coach / mentor to explore how C&M can assist you in putting your plans into action with positive support and motivation.
This is a fabulous member benefit in terms of cost, time but more so in personal investment and the self-growth opportunities it is sure to bring

Mireille Jackman
I have been in the profession for thirty-five years, initially as a dental nurse. In 1988, I joined the Army where I subsequently qualified as a dental hygienist.
Since 2016, I have been teaching clinical skills to undergraduates, and have been mentoring & coaching dental professionals who are wanting to develop their career and obtain clarity on the direction they want to take, and I am looking forward to supporting members of the BSDHT in this way.
I have completed a number of coaching and mentoring courses through the Open University, my local Deanery, and Health Education England, and am currently in the process of completing the ILM level 5 in Coaching and Mentoring.
I have a passion for sharing the knowledge I have, and one of my greatest joys is to watch the progression of individuals, and to see them flourish into clinicians with positive & realistic expectations, and increased confidence.
I am able to offer support & constructive feedback and I will help you build self-confidence, self-esteem and self-belief. My experience & empathy, my communication skills & understanding, are qualities I bring to my mentoring.
I work well with those who believe they are capable of achieving more, but have become stuck in a situation, and those who maybe unsure of which course of action will give them the most rewarding outcome. I am committed to helping you develop as a professional and I will work with you to improve your skills, and to inspire and support you to be the best version of yourself.
I am comfortable with mentoring clients through both professional & personal issues. I can provide email support, and I am happy to listen to clients via video link or telephone at mutually convenient and pre-arranged times.
Our initial contact would involve you telling me how you are feeling, the current issues you are facing and what is preventing you from moving forward. From there we can discuss how you want to feel, what you want to achieve, and how to build resilience should you face similar issues in the future. After that, it’s about working together, and establishing a plan with strategies that you can utilise to get you where you want to be.
I am here to help you achieve your full potential, to live a more enjoyable life, with lower stress & more confidence.

I have worked in dentistry since 1999, this started as an accidental career choice. Following my A Levels I was all set to join the Royal Navy, but I decided I wasn’t ready and felt too young. Due to my strong work ethic, I knew I had to find employment and managed to secure a trainee dental nurse position, never realising that I was about to embark on my perfect career where my love of dentistry was realised.
In 2001, I decided to follow my childhood dream and join the Royal Navy, by then I was a qualified Dental Nurse. In my first year serving I had an opportunity to apply for Dental Hygienist training commencing 2002 and I qualified in 2004. Following qualification, I was very fortunate to be assigned a mentor for my first 3 months in practice away from the comfort blanket of dental school. I was mentored by the senior hygienist in the region and this period was invaluable and I was able to find my way very quickly. I remained in the Royal Navy until 2009 during which time I worked on land and sea and finished my time as a Hygienist Tutor at the Defence Dental Services Training Establishment in Aldershot.
Since leaving the Royal Navy I have spent time in both NHS and Private practice and currently work for BUPA in Gloucester. During both my time in the Royal Navy and since, I have experienced both the highs and lows of dentistry. There are many times during my career where mentoring would have been extremely helpful, not just when newly qualified.
As a mentor I can tap into both my positive and negative experiences of dentistry to provide empathy, support and enable you to navigate through the problems you are encountering. In early 2020 I experienced a mental health crisis partly due to the stress I was experiencing at work and although I can’t provide counselling, I can certainly provide support and enable you to navigate through the darkness by signposting to relevant agencies. I believe that we all deserve to be the best versions of ourselves no matter where we are in our career progression.
Over the years I have informally mentored many colleagues and friends. Following my mental health recovery, I have made it my mission to provide support to other dental professionals to ensure they realise they are not alone in their thinking.
I have completed a short course for DCP’s in Coaching and Mentoring via The University of Kent and I am currently studying towards my ILM Level 5 in Effective Coaching and Mentoring which I will complete in early 2022. I look forward to meeting you and aiding you in your journey to find a clear pathway.

Helen Minnery
My dental career spans 37 years, where I started as a Dental Nurse. I qualified as a Dental Hygienist in 1992 from Liverpool Dental Hospital and have worked all over the Northwest region in NHS, mixed and private practice. I currently work at Rose Lane Dental Practice in Liverpool, where I have worked for the past 26 years starting 1 day a week, while working solely for Rose Lane for the past 18 years. We have a large multidisciplinary team, with general dentistry, specialists, dental hygienists, and dental therapists. I also lecture at a local and a national level on Implants, Perio incorporating teamwork within these topics.
In 2013 I graduated from the university of central Lancashire (U.C.L.A.N.) with a BSc (Hons) in Dental studies.
My involvement with BSDHT has spanned well over 15 years, from 2014- 2016 I was President Elect and 2016 - 2018 President. I feel this has given me a unique insight to BSDHT members, their needs and struggles within the profession. One thing I have learnt that actually it doesn’t matter if you have been qualified for over 20 years or a recent graduate, we often need some guidance or help. After the tough year that many have suffered due to COVID and BSDHT announcing the mentoring programme, I felt that this something I would like to be involved in to help the members and give back. I have undertaken the BSDHT mentoring programme with the university of Kent. This has given me the insight and skills to enable me to evolve as a mentor. Over the years at the practice, I have informally mentored team members on professional issues, but also receive request from dental hygienists and dental therapist to come along and observe for the day. This again is where informal mentoring takes place.
I will draw on my wisdom and all my experiences through my professional career, the good the bad and the ugly to share and help the mentees. I am a down to earth, fair, honest, and practical and will use these qualities within my mentoring style.

Miranda Steeples
I have been a member of BSDHT since I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2009. As an active member of the South East regional group, I held the role of treasurer before stepping up to the Honorary Treasurer role in 2018, and then to the position of BSDHT President Elect in 2020.
My story is one of years of self-doubt until I had the good fortune to meet people who saw things in me that I did not. These people were informal mentors who supported me to become the best I could be, who guided me along the appropriate routes, and towards the facilitators to make things happen. I want to be that person for others, to see the qualities they have and help them see them too and realise their full potential.
With that in mind, I have undertaken the training offered by the University of Kent in association with BSDHT. Offering formal mentoring is a new experience for me, but one in which I am sure I will grow and develop just as much as the people I support.
I will draw upon my own personal experiences of coming into the profession and a university education later on in life, the challenges that can bring, and how to work with and around them. Having gone on to study for a Master’s recently, my areas of interest will be in both professional and educational development.
If appropriate, I am happy to meet face to face with clients, or virtually via video calls if this is more practicable. Support via email can be provided if this would be of value to the client. I would expect the client to complete the relevant forms prior to the initial meeting, and to commit to both their tasks that might be set during a session before the next one, and to bring ideas and thoughts in preparation for the sessions to make them as fulfilling and fruitful as possible.

Sophia Spencer
My career in dentistry started in 1989 when I began work as a trainee dental nurse at a practice in Hampshire. Previously I had been working in The Retail sector but only intended to do this short term. I felt my true vocation was caring for others.
I quickly obtained my nursing qualification and then a year later I gained my oral health educator’s certificate. I loved the fact that this allowed me one to one with patients.Encouraged by the support I was getting from colleagues I applied to The Royal Army Dental Centre in Aldershot to study dental hygiene.
I was fortunate to be offered a place and joined a group of like-minded people all encouraging and helping each other through the training. Indeed, being part of a team is what I have relished throughout my dental career.
Since qualifying in 1997 I have worked in general practice. Promoting dental health to the community became a passion of mine and I have enjoyed talking to all age groups especially pre-school and school age children, as well as adolescents and visiting care homes and educating staff. After thirty-two years in dentistry, I would like to share the knowledge I have gained. Throughout my career I have been involved in mentoring and providing support informally. More recently to nurses training to be hygienists/ therapists; It has been wonderful watching them progress into skilled clinicians with their own expectations and goals whilst gaining in confidence. Buoyed by these experiences I have undertaken The BSDHT Dental Care Professional Coaching and Mentoring Short course.
As a mentor I would be able to offer guidance, and support in a non- judgemental way. There is nothing I would like more than to share my expertise and experience. It is my aim that my positivity and enthusiasm would leave your mind refreshed and stimulated.
I am a good listener, empathetic and understanding. I would give you the time to open up and be the real you. To be able to help you gain self-confidence and self-belief. I feel I would be able to lend an ear and listen to your struggles and apprehensions. To set goals and nurture expectations.
I recognise that mentoring is not only for those newly qualified but for those who have been qualified for years and lost their way or feel anxious and abandoned especially during the Pandemic.
We can work through your stumbling blocks, and I will give you constructive feedback. We can schedule our appointments at mutually convenient times either by email, video link or on the phone; whichever you feel most comfortable with. At the first meeting we will talk through your worries and concerns and what is stopping you progressing. We can build on your expectations for the future, enabling a greater feeling of self-worth. I can help put you at ease in different situations by helping you to build strategies to cope when you feel out of your comfort zone. We can take stock of where you have come from, what you have already achieved and what direction you want to take. I hope I can make you learn from things that have gone wrong and help you put them right.
As a mentor I will endeavour to give you 100% and I will conduct myself with a calm, easy-going professional persona. I hope as we get to know each other we can have fun along the way!

Alexandra Vasey
I have completed the BSDHT Mentoring and Coaching course, in association with the University of Kent that gives me the skills to provide coaching and / or mentoring.
I have been involved in dentistry for over 20 years; working in general practice, specialist perio practice, community dental service and hospital dental service. Alongside this, I have done voluntary work abroad, and at home, help with the organisation and running of the dental service for Crisis at Christmas.
I am also Mum to a lively 5-year-old and keen runner and skier.
Your career should stimulate, excite, and fulfil – not frustrate and restrict. I feel my cross-sector experiences will be of value to anyone wondering “what next?” or finding an untapped passion – both on a professional or personal capacity.
My style of mentoring and coaching will be energising and inspiring. By taking a relaxed approach I aim deliver an enjoyable session, but by using the Challenge / Stretch method we can have a clear insight into what YOU want to achieve and how to get there.
I am happy to deliver sessions face to face (if practical), via Zoom or telephone, and follow up emails if helpful.

Cathy Barber
I particularly enjoy working with clients who are struggling to find balance and clarity maybe within their personal life or career, who may be finding it difficult to navigate successfully towards their future pathway.
I enjoy working with clients from a wide background and experience, who are open minded to change. I am happy to mentor clients about work or personal issues and can arrange a Zoom Meeting along with support by email.
I initially qualified as a Dental Hygienist whilst serving in the British Army in 1994. I then worked in the UK and Germany mainly in Oral Surgery Departments, along with General Practice and Orthodontic Clinics. Since leaving the Forces, I have again worked in Oral Surgery, along with General Practice, including both NHS and Corporate. For the last 20 years, I have worked in Private Periodontal Referral Practices and have worked closely with Co-ordinating the Clinic with Periodontists and a Team of Dental Hygienists, working as the Lead Dental Hygienist.
Since qualifying I have undertaken numerous professional courses and CPD. I am also a level 5 qualified Clinical Aromatherapist. This helps me to combine a holistic approach with both clients and patients.
I undertook training to become a Professional Mentor/Coach with the BSDHT. I also plan to complete the Level 5 Coaching and Mentoring course next year. As part of the BSDHT I undertake regular updates and training along with professional supervision. I have experience mentoring colleagues in Practice to help them to develop self-reflection and career clarity.
I would describe my mentoring style as Positive, Reflective, and forward thinking. I would expect my client to commit to reflect and embrace the possibility and power of change which is already within them.
Initially I would work with the Client to discover their question and motivation. I would then help them to explore these more deeply and help guide them to their answer with Mentoring. My clients can expect an experienced, empathetic, motivated Mentor, who will have your best interests at the fore.

Christine Thomas
I started my working life in dentistry as a seventeen-year-old trainee Dental Nurse. Where I worked in general dental practice, once qualified I worked in orthodontic practice and within a large hospital restorative department.
I qualified as a Dental Hygienist from Cardiff University in 1999. In my twenty-three years, as a hygienist, I have practiced within private and NHS practices. I also worked for ten years within a National Oral Health Promotion Programme, as an Oral Health Improvement Practitioner and Honorary Lecturer for two large universities in South Wales. Lecturing (general) Nursing students, qualified Nurses and Health Care Support Workers. During this time, I undertook my Postgraduate Certificate in Education and achieved this in 2011. This is where my passion for Dental Public Health started, and I attained my MSc in 2020.
I now work for the hospital dental service treating patients whilst they are in hospital and also those referred for specialist care and two days in a large private practice. Where we have five hygienists. I have a passion for education and knowledge, both the passing on of and furthering of my own. I am still passionate about dental hygiene and being a dental hygienist, even though our profession and professionalism have been tested recently. I believe we offer more than ‘just a scrape’ and are more than ‘just a hygienist’. Through education and the passing on of knowledge we can change these perceptions and further the profession, reduce health inequalities and improve oral health.
In my career as a hygienist and practitioner I have had two mentors; they have been invaluable to me and provided support and clarity. I have also coached and mentored dental hygiene and therapy undergraduates, graduates, and other dental professionals both formally and informally.
I undertook the short mentoring course offered by the BSDHT as coaching and mentoring is something that I have had personal insight into and the realisation of how beneficial and inspiring mentoring and coaching can be. Mentoring supports the mentee to allow them to identify and achieve their goals, improve their skills, learning and development both professionally and personally. Enabling a mentee to achieve their goals is one of the best feelings. Often the mentee’s realisation that they had the answer all along but just needed some guidance, is rewarding and empowering not only for the mentee but also for the mentor. I am currently undertaking a ILM Management and Team Leader course, and I hope to undertake the ILM level 5 course in Coaching and Mentoring, next year.

Manjit Sandhu
Manjit has worked in the dental profession for over 25 years and has gained various qualifications throughout her time working in the profession.
Manjit qualified with Honours as a Dental Hygienist from University College Cork (Rep. of Ireland) in 2004 and was awarded the Castellini Award for the highest clinical skillset in her year. She has also undertaken postgraduate education and completed an MSc in Advanced Periodontal Practice from The University of Essex in 2018.
She is passionate about the profession and is continuously building on her knowledge and skillset. Her compassionate approach in her clinical care and her approach in supporting and motivating others in the profession reflect her beliefs and passion for the profession.
She believes in not only reaching for individual success but also helping and inspiring others to succeed, which led her to undertake, the BSDHT mentorship training programme with the University of Kent as she wanted to give back to the profession further.
Manjit is a member of the BSDHT, BAPD and the BSP and is currently working in private practice in Essex, The West End & The City of London.
She is also a Clinical Instructor on the "Back to Practice" course and, more recently, a part-time (Bank) Clinical Lecturer at The University of Portsmouth-Dental Academy.

Vicki Griffiths
Hello, my name is Vicki and I have completed the BSDHT Coaching and Mentoring course.
I qualified as a Dental Hygienist/Therapist (DH/DT) in 2019, previous to being a DH/DT I worked in a dental hospital in the North – West of England for 10 years as a Specialist Dental Nurse and Senior Nurse on Oral Surgery/Oral Medicine.
I now work at an ICE Postgraduate Institute and Hospital in Manchester two days a week and at Liverpool Dental Hospital on Special Care Dentistry three days a week. I feel my level of expertise lies in these areas.
I would like my mentee to work from their own initiative and be motivated and in return I would provide a relaxed and supportive network and help my mentee reach their dedicated goals. I am an active listener and passionate about dentistry, with being newly qualified I feel the type of mentee I could be most valuable to is newly qualified/student members or DH/DT’s who would like to be supported with growing their skill set, mainly with dental implants and supportive care. I have mentored Trainee Dental Nurses previously and Dental Nurses taking post – qualifications courses.
Although I have a busy schedule working full time, most evenings and weekends I am able to support my Mentee over the phone, by email or Zoom.

Margaret Quaicoe
My name is Margaret, and I am a dental therapist of almost 10 years. My journey like many others hasn’t been easy but I will always be grateful for the opportunities I have had. From working in as a dental therapist in hospital, private and general dental settings and now outreach work and public health in community. It’s never been a greater time in our field, opportunities are opening up slowly but surely. So, we can look to the future with positivity.
Coaching and mentoring have always been my passion and my plans to be Level 7 certified are on course in due time. For now though, I have completed two mentoring courses, with one with Kent university through BSDHT and Mind collective. I also have completed training in Leadership management skills, conflict resolution and Action Learning to name a few, through Kent community NHS trust. My current role in outreach work and public health as an oral health lead has meant I have had to utilise these skills in working relationships and to lead a successful project to improve oral health in the community.
I have a keen interest in the area of psychology and always look for ways to build on my knowledge. I’ve embarked on a COVID 19 mental health first Aid course which has been invaluable. The learning never stops for me! I also take part in volunteer work in community using informal mentoring. I have been able to offer ongoing support to young people as well as supporting families.
My niche in mentoring is based on career, business, and personal development. From my success in leading a team on a successful oral health project to management skills these have all been areas I have used mentoring practice. Mentoring has become a crucial part to my role.
I have worked in supporting project support officers, clinical leads as well as working collaboratively with various stakeholders.
My work with NHS has involved speaking in front of large audiences, carrying out presentations and setting up workshops. I can bring my knowledge of this to the table so to speak as well as other skills I have acquired.
Asides from my experience in dentistry, I also have a background in business support for a software application startup business which is running successfully.
I understand the challenges we sometimes face when we wish to pursue a passion but are faced with so many possibilities, options, and interests. I can help to facilitate in providing clarity and direction as this is something I have come across from experience.
I work well with clients who seek for help but have a desire for change and to maximise potential. Areas I work on with clients are both professional and personal issues.
My passion for helping others has always been my driving force for all that I do. I feel my compassion, empathy, patience, and effective communication skills are qualities I bring to my mentoring and coaching practice. I am a calm and easy-going person with a positive zest for life putting people at ease. My approach is structured however and focused.
I am happy to be contacted via email to provide support along with sessions.

Sarah Murray
Much of my professional career has been spent in dental education, although I worked clinically as both a dental hygienist and a dental therapist in primary and secondary care post graduation. In my everyday work I support staff and students, whether this is the everyday challenges we encounter clinically, or whether this is considering a role change, such as entering a first job or a move into dental education.
Being a Programme Lead for over 20 years, I have extensive experience of leading and being part of a team, and the challenges this can bring. I can empathise with members who may be questioning their role and how they fit in to their clinical environments, as I experience challenges related to the different roles within dentistry and how these can cause conflict.
I have a MA degree in Primary Health and Community Care- Towards Reflective Practice, which was novel in the 1990’s, when reflective practice was not considered ‘mainstream’. Therefore, I feel I am a good reflector, buat also a good listener and supporting individuals on their personal journey. I want to support people in my profession to achieve their potential, as we are an underutilised profession in the dental workforce and have so much to offer.
I am a co-founder of the Moveit4Smiles group which focusses on mouth cancer awareness for the public and profession. We undertake challenges such as walking mountains and fundraise to support the Oral Health Foundation in continuing their great work in this area. Moveit4Smiles has raised over £30k since the 1st 500 mile walk in 2014.

Anne Ford
Hi, my name is Anne Ford and I have been working as a Dental Hygienist for over 40 years and have certainly seem a great many changes in the dental profession in that time.
I am married and have 2 adult children and live in Surrey.
I work part time in a general dental practice near to where I live, the practice is an independent small practice treating NHS and private patients. I also work part time as a dental tutor to BSc/ DTH students.
When I first qualified, I lived in Norfolk and worked alongside an Orthodontist and with the local community dental service treating patients in a hospital setting along with patients in a secure facility and community run nursing homes. Since moving to Surrey, I continued to work for the community dental service and a totally private practice in Reigate. Working in several different areas did prove challenging at times as well as bringing up my two children, balancing work commitments, home life and managing to complete all my required CPD. Twelve years ago, I became a dental tutor at King’s College Hospital working part time. I completed my PG certificate in Higher education in 2014 and in 2017 I started my master’s degree in advanced and Specialist Healthcare (Advanced Dental Professional Practice) writing my dissertation on Cultural awareness in dental education. I was fortunate to submit my dissertation and complete my master’s just as Covid hit the United Kingdom in March 2020. I have always wanted to keep updated in my skills both as a hygienist and in recent years as an academic tutor.
Since qualifying I have always been a member of the BSDHT and whilst I lived in Norfolk, I was a founder member and chair of the East Anglian Regional group. I have always found being a member of the BSDHT a great source of support and knowledge. Sometimes working in practice, I felt isolated. I aways enjoyed attending regional group meetings to share experiences, ideas see new products and often gained comfort from others that we were all working to the same goal, supporting our patients, and enjoying our own journey along the way.
I have come forward to join the BSDHT mentors as with my own experience I may be able to assist members that may feel a mentor would help them to clarify their own pathways, identify their goals, their strengths and look to assist in making positive changes in their lives.

Yvonne Derbyshire
My dental career started in 1987 when I trained as a dental nurse at the University of Bristol Dental Hospital from where I qualified in 1989. In 1990 in moved to The University of Liverpool Dental Hospital to train as a dental hygienist where I qualified in 1991. I fell in love with Liverpool and have worked there ever since.
I have worked in many aspects of dentistry; NHS dental practice, on the cardiothoracic department at Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool, as a tutor hygienist on the school of dental hygiene at Liverpool Dental Hospital, in Denplan/private dentistry and corporate dentistry for Boots Dentalcare. I now work in Rose Lane Dental Practice, a large referral specialist dental practice in Mossley Hill, South Liverpool working alongside specialist dentists, general dentists, hygienists and therapists.
In December 2017 I graduated from The University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) with a BSc (Hons) in Dental Studies for Dental Care Professionals. My dissertation looked at mentoring support for hygienists and therapists, from newly qualified to those already established in general practice. This has led me to further my studies and gain an ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring. In doing so I have discovered that dental people need guidance, help, coaching and mentoring at any juncture of their career and can feel lost or without support whether they are newly graduated or have 20 years of experience. In my coaching I have helped clients in dentistry, from other healthcare professions and the business world.
